YMCA (Chennai) enters final

MADURAI: YMCA (Chennai) and Sports Hostel (Tirunelveli) entered the boys' hockey final in the 23rd Bharathiar Day Tamil Nadu State school games meet here on Monday.

The results:

Boys: hockey (semifinals): YMCA, Chennai bt VABHSS (Tiruvallur, Thanj. Divn.) 5-0; Sports Hostel (Tirunelveli) bt St. Mary's HSS (Dindigul, Madurai Divn.) 1-0.

Basketball: (quarterfinals): Sports Hostel (Madurai) bt SAV HSS (Tuticorin, Tvly) 76-58; St. Peter's HSS (Rayapuram, Chennai) bt Holy Cross Matric HSS (Salem 55-37); St. Britto's HSS (Madurai) bt St. Joseph's HSS (Chengalpet) 53-50; Sports Hostel (Salem) bt Shristi MHSS (Vellore) 53-33.

Handball (semifinals): St. Britto's HSS (Madurai) bt St. Vincent MHSS (Chennai 20-5); Swamy Sivananda HSS (Coimbatore) bt St. James HSS (Tiruchi) 20-15.

Table tennis: singles (semifinals): K. Viswanathan (Velammal MHSS, Chennai) bt Stalin Prabhu (Govt. HSS, Vilavancode, KK) 13-11, 11-4, 11-7; R. Pradeep (TVS HSS, Madurai) bt J. Jones Karunakaran (Campion HSS, Tiruchi) 11-6, 5-11, 11-4, 13-15, 11-4.

Dindigul restricts Thanjavur

Host Dindigul was 22 for one in five overs at close of play in reply to Thanjavur's 127 on the opening day of the two-day TNCA-Hercules MTB Turbo Drive inter-district under-19 cricket tournament pre-quarterfinals here on Monday.

The match had a delayed start after lunch due to wet ground conditions.

The scores: Thanjavur 127 in 51.5 overs (D. Prakash 71) vs. Dindigul 22 for one in five overs.

Tirunelveli beats Madurai

At Nagapattinam, Tirunelveli boys beat Madurai and Coimbatore girls defeated Kancheepuram in the State sub-junior volleyball championship held here on Sunday night.

Tirunelveli defeated Madurai 25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 17-15 and Coimbatore beat Kancheepuram 25-12, 25-13, 25-18.

The results: Boys (semifinals): Tirunelveli bt Nagapattinam 25-19, 25-15; Madurai bt Tiruvarur 25-17, 25-20.

Girls: Kancheepuram bt Villupuram 27-25, 16-25, 25-22; Coimbatore bt Tiruvannamalai 25-23, 15-25, 25-20.

Erode edges past Theni

At Sivaganga, Erode beat Theni 4-3 via tie-breaker in the State junior inter-district football championship conducted by Star Muslim FC at Ilayangudi, near here, on Monday. The teams were locked goalless at the regulation time.

In another match, Salem beat Madurai in a tie-breaker too. Prabhakar of Madurai on Udaya Sankar of Salem were sent off in the 29th minute. Syed Mubarak, Meyyappan and Vigneswara Karthikeyan scored for Salem in the tie-breaker. For Madurai none scored.

In the Erode-Theni tie, Karthik, Mahesh, Gopal and Gnanasathya Robin scored for Erode and Periakaruppan, Arun Prasad and Murugan scored for Theni in the tie-breaker.
