Mysore to host tourism mart

New circuits in the region planned

MYSORE: The Government will organise an international tourism mart in the city, preliminary exercise for which has begun.

The mart, which will be organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), will help promote Mysore and Karnataka. It is expected to attract over 400 delegates from across the world, Deputy Commissioner S. Selvakumar and Assistant Director of Tourism Vikram has said. They were talking to mediapersons here on Monday after Mr. Selvakumar released a tourist guide, which is meant for free distribution. Six thousand copies of the guide have been printed and will be available with tourist operators and at key places.

Vivek Bharati, Advisor, National Policy Programmes of FICCI, and other officials recently visited the city to assess the feasibility of organising an international mart here. It was planned to be organised in Bangalore, but the State Government was keen on Mysore, considering its tourism potential. Mr. Selvakumar said the number of domestic and international tourists visiting the city is on the rise. The trend is expected to continue till February, after which there will be a decline in numbers owing to the academic year coming to an end and conduct of examinations.

Mr. Vikram said the Department of Tourism has submitted a proposal to develop new circuits in the region, which is expected to cost Rs. 5 crores. It is awaiting clearance from the Centre.
