BSNL offer extended

THRISSUR: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has extended the scheme of free trial broadband connections for internet dial-up customers to January 31. According to a release here on Monday, the internet dial-up customers of the BSNL or other service providers can submit applications for two months of free trial broadband service at 13 exchanges in the district. — Staff Reporter

Campus interview

KOLLAM: The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) will conduct a campus interview at Fatima Mata National College at 10 a.m. on January 11. C.K. Felix, Principal, said final-year degree students and postgraduate students of the college were eligible to attend the interview.

KOLLAM: The Kerala NGO Association has registered its protest against the hike in price for rice and wheat distributed through ration shops. In a statement here, district president of the association S. Ulhas Kumar called for the immediate withdrawal of the price hike. — Staff Reporter

Afghanistan aid for Maniyappan's kin

KANNUR: The family of Maniyappam, who was murdered by the Taliban in Afghanistan, will be given financial assistance by the Afghan Government, according to Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed.

Quoting the Minister, the Information and Public Relations Department here on Monday said the Afghan Government had announced a compensation of $5,000 to the family of the deceased. The Afghan Embassy official Shah Gulfar would hand over the money to the widow of Maniyappan, Mr. Ahamed said. — Staff Reporter

Akademi award for Arundhati Roy

NEW DELHI: Booker prize-winning author Arundhati Roy has been awarded the 2005 Sahitya Akademi Award in English for her book of essays `The Algebra of Infinite Justice.' The award recommended by a three-member jury was approved on Monday by Akademi president Gopi Chand Narang.

According to a release issued by the Akademi, the collection of essays was a unanimous recommendation for the award given to books first published between January 2001 and December 2003. Ms. Roy will be presented the award - comprising a plaque and a cash component of Rs.50,000 - at a function to be held in the Capital on February 21. — Special Correspondent

Kalam gifts computer to Amala student

THRISSUR: Thulasi J. Pillai who is a research scholar at Amala Cancer Hospital and Research Centre here has received a rare gift - President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has donated Rs.40,000 to buy her a personal computer. Ms. Thulasi, who stays at Udaya Nagar, Ayyanthole, on the outskirts of the city had written a letter to the President stating that it would be a great help in her research work if he could sanction her a personal computer.

On receiving the letter, the President verified the genuineness of her request by calling up the Amala Cancer Hospital authorities. Mr. Kalam then sent Rs.40,000 to the director of the hospital through District Collector Premachandra Kurup for buying a personal computer for Ms. Thulasi. — Staff Reporter

Ordinance for welfare of dairy farmers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R. L. Bhatia has promulgated an Ordinance providing for formation of a Welfare Fund for farmers engaged in animal husbandry.

The Fund will be used for giving pension and other benefits to members of milk cooperatives. Members of primary milk cooperative societies could register as members of the Fund. They should remit 25 paise for every litre of milk supplied by them as their contribution to the Fund before the tenth of every month. Milk producers who were members of the cooperatives for a minimum of ten years will be eligible for pension on attainment of 60 years of age. — Special Correspondent
