NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party general secretary and spokesman Amar Singh on Monday offered an apology to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his remarks that some people in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) were also involved in the phone tapping case. Mr. Singh, who filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a judicial probe into the incident, said he was mindful of "causing hurt to the Prime Minister," as expressed by the latter's press adviser Sanjay Baru. He tried to express his regrets to Dr. Singh over the phone, but was unable to get through to him.
BJP's charge
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that it had credible information that the telephone of its former president, L.K. Advani, was tapped during the Volcker controversy, and sought an all-party meeting to discuss the "serious issue." Party president Rajnath Singh said the Government should immediately inquire into the matter. Mr. Advani said he was surprised when he was told that his telephone too was tapped. "In the six years we were in government, we did not order tapping of anyone's telephone," he said. Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the Government should assure the Opposition that in future there would be no tapping of telephones of senior political leaders.
