Cabinet nod for consultants to build tunnel

Staff Reporter

Shorter link to come up between Nehru Stadium and Games Village

NEW DELHI: In a major boost to infrastructure projects in the Capital, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday gave its nod for appointment of private consultants to prepare the detailed project report for construction of a 1.7 km stretch running between Ring Road at National Highway 24 near Millennium Park to Lodhi Road near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium including a 400-metre-long tunnel that would finally link the Commonwealth Games Village in East Delhi.

The proposal to appoint consultants was approved at the Cabinet meeting headed by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Giving this information later, Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia said the project would cost about Rs. 200 crores and start from NH-24 where it joins Ring Road. It would then pass through the Millennium Park, a 400-metre-long underground tunnel running below the railway line passing through Sunder Nagar nursery, Neela Gumbadh and ending on Lodhi Road near the Nehru Stadium.

Dr. Walia said consultants for the project had been appointed way back in 1993 but the matter was referred to the Delhi Urban Arts Commission in 1996. Then again in 2002, it was decided to de-link the project from the Master Plan of Delhi and put in the cold storage.

However, the matter was again taken up with the Delhi Development Authority and it was felt that with the Commonwealth Games Village coming up in East Delhi, it was important to have a link that was free of traffic signals and did not pass through congested areas.

Sportspersons

The whole project was again revived and it was decided to take up the construction of this 1.7 km stretch including a tunnel, first of its own kind, in the Capital. It would ensure movement of sportspersons through the village to the games site without any hindrance.
