LENDING A HAND: Superintendent of Police D.S. Chauhan distributing cash among Chenchu children in Kalwa Srirampur mandal.
KARIMNAGAR: The district police have embarked on the ambitious task of constructing houses for Chenchu tribals in Kalwa Srirampur mandal of the district. The police have also acted as social change agents and transformed the lives of the tribals by educating them about good food habits and taking an oath from them to stop consumption of ID liquor. Three private teachers have been appointed to impart education to the Chenchus and their children at their own hutments.
Incomplete houses
The Chenchus live in abject poverty in small huts on the outskirts of Kalwa Srirampur mandal headquarters. When the local SI, G. Krishna visited their huts, the tribals told them about the houses the Government had sanctioned, but which remained incomplete due to release of only Rs. 20,000 for each house. At least Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 80,000 was required for completion of each house. The local police with the help of philanthropists in the mandal started construction of the houses. A total of 14 houses are being constructed for the population of 35 Chenchus in the mandal headquarters. The work has reached the slab level and the houses will soon be handed over to the Chenchus. Superintendent of Police Devendra Singh Chauhan visited the village, inspected the construction work and interacted with the tribals. He promised to provide Rs. 1 lakh assistance for the construction of houses by mobilizing funds. The SP also distributed Rs. 10,000 to the children of Chenchus for their education needs including purchase of books, slates etc. He said measures would be taken for the total literacy of the tribes.
