Supporters of Vasan, Ramamurthy clash

THANJAVUR: Factionalism in the Congress came to the fore on Monday, when supporters of party leader Tindivanam Ramamurthy and TNCC president G.K. Vasan clashed at a meeting organised here to celebrate the 121st anniversary of the party.

When the meeting, organised by supporters of Mr. Ramamurthy, started, Satyaraj, son of Nanji K.Varadarajan, district president, was allegedly beaten up by supporters of Mr. Ramamurthy. He was whisked away by the police.

Mr. Vasan's supporters staged a demonstration in front of the marriage hall where the meeting was held. When they tried to enter the hall, they were arrested. Fortyfive supporters of Mr. Vasan, led by Vayalur Ramanathan, were held.

Later, the meeting continued.
