CBDT: Bachchan was not served notice in hospital

Letters were sent to his residence by Speed Post

Amitabh Bachchan

New Delhi : Film actor Amitabh Bachchan was not issued any notice by tax authorities to recover dues when he was hospitalised in Mumbai, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said on Monday.

``No letter was sent to him after he was hospitalised, demanding payment of tax,'' the CBDT said in a statement. ``Notices and letters to Bachchan were issued on November 17, 2005, and November 25, 2005... . It is understood that Bachchan was hospitalised on November 28, 2005.''

The letters were sent to Bachchan's residential address through Speed Post. The tax arrears pertained to the assessment years 2001-02 and 2002-03.

After giving effect to the order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and credit for payments already made, the demand for 2001-02 was reduced to Rs 2.80 crore. For 2002-03, against a total demand of Rs 18.15 crore, which was disputed before the CIT (Appeals), the demand was recalculated at Rs. 4.12 crore, the CBDT said.

Proceedings for recovery

It was pointed out that the proceedings for recovery began in accordance with the law in August 2005 and Mr. Bachchan had over three months to make the payments. Mr. Bachchan reportedly said that he was in the ICU and actually wrote out cheques from there.

The Congress, meanwhile, sought to deflect Mr. Bachchan's reported statement that the orders to taxmen to demand Rs 5 crore from him when he was recently hospitalised had ``come from Delhi.''

``The Finance Ministry is also situated in Delhi. There is nothing astonishing about it,'' AICC general secretary Ambika Soni said when she was asked to react to Mr. Bachchan's comment.

Ms. Soni dismissed charges that he was being ``targeted'' on account of his proximity to Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh. ``If we do something illegal, we have to face the law.'' — PTI
