TSR Awards given away

Avoid sensationalism, Chief Minister tells journalists

BANGALORE: The giving away of awards instituted by the State Government to those who have made significant contributions in their respective fields of activity should be expedited, Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh has said. He asked Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash and Information Minister B. Shivaram to speed up the process.

He was speaking after giving away TSR Awards, and environment and development awards for 2002-05 to journalists. These awards are given annually in the name of late T.S. Ramachander Rao, former Editor of Prajavani.

K. Satyanarayana, former Editor of Kannada Prabha, H.N. Shadaksharappa of Janatavani from Davanagere and Nagamani S. Rao were felicitated with the TSR awards. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation.

Environment awards

Shree Padre and Nagesh Hegde, Assistant Editor, Sudha, H.R. Krishnamurthy of All India Radio and Abboor Rajashekhara, Bureau Chief of Prajavani, Davanagere edition were given away the environment awards.

Development awards

M.R. Gavirayappa, former AIR correspondent, Vishwanath Baburao Patil, former correspondent of Daman (Hindi) and The Hindu in Bidar, G.S. Ujjinappa of Chitradurga and T.V. Sivanandan, Special Correspondent of The Hindu in Gulbarga were honoured with the development awards by the Chief Minister. These awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and a citation.

Replying to the felicitations, Mr. Satyanarayana criticised the three-year delay in presenting the awards. He was given the award for 2002-03.

Condemning sensationalism, Mr. Singh said that he was shocked to read the news of change of Governor.

He said that he had to contact Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for confirmation. He asked journalists not to publish such baseless reports.

The Deputy Chief Minister released a booklet on the awardees. The former Chief Justice of Karnataka-Kerala High Courts, who was chairman of the selection committee of the Awards Advisory Committee, and Information Commissioner K.V.R. Tagore were present.

Mr. Satyanarayana asked journalists to maintain standards and dignity of profession.

Shantakumari Devaraj, Principal Secretary to Government, Department of Information, welcomed the gathering. K. Mallikarjun, Joint Director of Department of Information, introduced the awardees.
