NEW DELHI: As part of security arrangements for the upcoming Republic Day celebrations here in the Capital, the Delhi police have urged their counterparts in neighbouring States to put in more efforts for preventing sale of mobile phone SIM-cards to people with suspicious antecedents. During an Inter-State Coordination meeting at Police Headquarters here on Monday attended by police officers from Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the participants were requested to step up vigil on SIM-card dealers in their areas and sensitise them to properly check the identification documents of applicants before issuing them connections. Apart from the routine exercise of carrying out tenants' verification, they have been asked to sensitise car dealers, particularly those selling second-hand vehicles, property dealers and other sections of society to be alert. The police would also keep a close track on smuggling of illegal firearms and explosives. With improved communication via the Zipnet, the police of the States concerned would share reports on suspected militant activities. A close watch would also be kept on activities of auto-lifters, who sell vehicles stolen from Delhi in other States. Also, all the entry-points to the Capital would be kept under close surveillance. At another meeting held by the South Delhi range on Monday, about 750 people were sensitised about the preventive measures to be taken in the run-up to the Republic Day celebrations. The participants included mobile phone dealers, private security officials and members of residents' welfare associations. All aspects of security arrangements for busy market places and other vital installations were discussed during the meeting. Earlier, the police had also held meetings with hospital authorities to review the preparedness for any eventuality.
