Thiruvananthapuram: An eight-year-old boy was killed on Monday morning when a portion of a concrete pillar fell on him while he was playing in the rented house the family was staying in at Kurakkani in Varkala. According to the police, the victim, Sachin, is the son of Kailas Bachu, of Paschimpuri, New Delhi. Sachin is a Class I student of Jawahar Public School, Edava. The boy was rushed to the hospital, but died of injuries. According to the police, the incident took place around 8.45 p.m. when Sachin was playing with a rope tied to the pillar. Kailas Bachu sells clothes from Rajasthan and Gujarat in the helipad area of the resort.
Illicit liquor seized
The city police have seized 100 litres of illicit liquor that was being transported in an autorickshaw near Kannammoola on Monday morning. According to the police, the seizure was made during the vehicle checking carried out by a team led by Additional Sub-Inspector Sadasivan. Seeing the police party near the Vigilance Special Court, the three occupants of the autorickshaw fled, abandoning the vehicle. The police recovered two sacks from the autorickshaw. The illicit liquor was stored in 20 plastic sachets each having a capacity of five litres. The police have registered a case.
Youth held
The Fort police have arrested two youths in connection with the destruction of furniture and teaching aids at Government Higher Secondary School, Kamaleswaram, on Sunday. Police gave the name of the arrested as Sreejith and Jith, both resident of Kalady. The youth entered the school premises around 4 p.m. and destroyed furniture and teaching aids. The duo were produced in court and remanded.
Driver dead
A 52-year-old driver found in an unconscious state in a jeep near Jagathy on Sunday by a police patrol team was pronounced dead on being shifted to the casualty wing of Medical College Hospital. According to the Thampanoor police, the deceased is Vijayadharan, a Railway employee and a native of Karumcode, near Chathanoor. The vehicle was found parked on the roadside. The deceased was under treatment for heart problem. Police suspect he might have had cardiac arrest while returning after dropping the duty officer at his home. The police have registered a case of unnatural death.
Man dead
A 55-year-old man who was found unconscious in a cinema at Thampanoor on Monday afternoon died before he could be taken to Medical College Hospital. Hospital sources identified the deceased as Abdul Rasheed, 55, of Chala.
Killed in accident
A 42-year-old man, who was returning after the Sabarimala pilgrimage, died when the door of the van in which he was travelling flew open, throwing him out of the vehicle, at Punalur on Monday evening. Meenakshisundaram, a native of Madurai, sustained head injuries. He was rushed to Kollam Government Hospital and later to Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
