You may wonder how a reader at the Kozhikode Public Library and Research Centre may read in peace. Situated near it is a public meeting corner where political and social organisations organise meetings on almost all issues under the sun. Not to mention about rallies taken out before the meetings. With decibel levels soaring, those in the reference section are the worst affected. A survey has found that announcements from vehicles fitted with public address system can cause sound levels above 100 decibels at a distance of 10 to 15 metres. The noise pollution caused by the use of public address systems and other means may well exceed the limits prescribed by law. Situated right in the heart of the city, the visitors to the library have to suffer blaring horns from all sorts of vehicles. What is interesting is that these meetings sometimes may even bemoan the falling reading habits, just when they were disturbing some readers.
