`District should tap export potential'

Staff Reporter

Many do not receive proper financial assistance

ERODE: As the district produces fruits such as mango, banana and grapes of high quality and crops that have high demand in countries abroad, it should go in for export, said the president of the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) S. Aravind.

Industrial growth

At a seminar on export to European countries organised recently by bankers, the Erode District Small Scale Industries Association and the Erode Textile Garment Exporters Association, he said industrial growth was evident in the country now. Quality products had good market abroad, and exporters here should tap the potential.

Products of Small Scale Industries also had the potential for export, he said.

The Chief Manager of Canara Bank in Erode Varagunan said that every year the country imported goods estimated at $ 106 million, but the export was only $ 80 million.

Liberal loans

Despite the potential, many were reluctant to export their products due to lack of proper guidance and financial assistance. Banks advanced liberally for products meant for export, and a number of agencies provided guidance for export. Textile goods, especially value-added products fetched good price in the international market, he said.

The president of the Erode District Small Scale Industries Association S.K. Rajeswaran said that very few in the district exported products such as garments, food items and leather.

Skilled labourers

President and secretary of the Erode Textile Garments Exporters Association V.P. Subramaniam and S. Sivanandham said that they conducted seminars to encourage garment export.

But, for want of skilled labourers such as tailors, they could not export the required quantities. They urged exporters to meet deadlines. Programme Coordinator K.R. Gnanasambandan explained outlined the demands in other countries and the export potential.
