Geet Sethi suffers another reverse

S.R. Suryanarayan

Joshi, Savur also lose as Advani sizzles

CHENNAI: It was a sensational day in the LIC-BSNL National billiards championship here on Tuesday.

Two greats — Geet Sethi and Devendra Joshi — suffered defeats while another former champion Arvind Savur had a tied score with Aditya Goenka before losing in the half-hour extra play held to break the deadlock.

On the brighter side was the rousing form of the reigning champion Pankaj Advani, who struck the highest break thus far in the championship, a big 313, while beating Kamal Rohmetra of J & K for his third win in Group A.

He also piled up two century breaks in a total of 1034, another high till date.

For Sethi, the championship has brought nightmares. He had his second loss in Group C league, this time to another promising player, Sourav Kothari of PSPB.

Though Sethi registered a handsome win against S. Das of Orissa, with a 231 and an unfinished 189 break, two losses in a six-player league can still prove dicey.

For former World runner-up Devendra Joshi there was a shock in store in the form of Yogesh Rai of Railway, a player of whom much is talked of. It was Joshi's first loss in Group B.

The results:

Group A: Pankaj Advani (PSPB) bt Raunaq Vazirani (Guj) 762-200; Shakeel Ahmed (WB) bt A. Elangovan (TN) 366-284; Kamal Rohmetra (J & K) bt Elango 362-322; Elang bt Vazirani 425-267; Brijesh Damani (WB) bt Rohmetra (J & K) 607-265; Advani bt Rohmetra (J & K) 1034-106.
