CHENNAI: The Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) probe into the alleged irregularities in the construction of the new Amaravathy bridge is in full swing with investigators examining 20 persons so far. The witnesses include seven IAS officers. Four teams of officials of the special unit are collecting evidence. After registering the case and conducting searches, the police are collecting documents. Sources said a technical committee, of three Chief Engineers, had inspected the bridge and submitted a report to the Government. A high-level committee considered it. A case was registered on December 24. The investigation would cover the alleged irregularities and the use of substandard material in the construction and the violation of norms. The sources said the officials were also looking into other aspects, including toll collection. The bridge was inaugurated in January 2000. The toll collection, from February 2000 to November 2005, amounted to Rs.10.73 crore.
