CHENNAI: The AIADMK General Council will meet on January 29, Chief Minister and party general secretary Jayalalithaa announced on Tuesday.

DMK to boycott Governor's address

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will boycott the Governor's address in the State Assembly on January 13.

Party general secretary K. Anbazhagan said the DMK had sought postponement of the address in view of the Boghi festival. But this was not heeded to. It amounted to denigrating the feelings of Tamils.

Earlier, the Pattali Makkal Katchi had decided not to participate for the same reason. — Special Correspondent

Vice Admiral visits Uchipuli

RAMANATHAPURAM: Vice Admiral of the Eastern Naval Command Suresh Mehta on Tuesday visited the Naval Air Station at Uchipuli.

Informed sources said he discussed with senior personnel of the Air Station their preparedness in case of eventualities arising out of the near-war situation in Sri Lanka.

Measures to thwart infiltration of Sri Lankan mercenaries and increase sea patrolling were part of the agenda. — Staff Reporter

Refresher course

CHENNAI: The UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Madras, will conduct refresher courses in Physics, Life Science and Herbal Science in February for university and college lecturers. The selected participants will be eligible for TA and DA as per UGC norms.

CMC-HAL accord on telemedicine project

VELLORE: The Christian Medical College (CMC) on Saturday signed an agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for a joint venture telemedicine link for consultation and medical services.

Director of the CMC Hospital, George M. Chandy, and Chief of Medical Services, HAL, Fred Simon Oommen, signed the pact. It is for providing telemedicine connectivity to the HAL Hospital at Sunabeda in Koraput district of Orissa. HAL is the first PSU to offer such a scheme for its employees.

The CMC has global connectivity through the Internet, and also a telemedicine project with the Indian Space Research Organisation for peripheral hospitals in the north, says a CMC release. — Staff Reporter

MLA injured in accident

KANCHEEPURAM: Srivaikundam MLA N. Shanmughanathan sustained injuries in an accident on Grand Southern Trunk Road at Pazhaveli near Chengalpattu on Tuesday. Enquiries reveal that the jeep in which the MLA was travelling collided with a goods carrier at 5 a.m. Mr. Shanmughanathan was bound for Tuticorin from Chennai. He left for Chennai for treatment in a private hospital. — Staff Reporter

Vedic scholar dead

CHENNAI: Tangirala Venkateswara Avadhani, a vedic scholar hailing from Andhra Pradesh, passed away at Sringeri on Saturday. He was 85. Sri Avadhani was the `Purvashrama' father of Sri Bharathi Theertha of the Sri Sarada Peetham at Sringeri, says a release from Sringeri Bharathi Vidyashram. — Special Correspondent

Five injured in accident

SATTUR : Five persons, including the drivers of two State-run buses, were injured in an accident involving the two buses on the Madurai-Tirunelveli highway near here on Tuesday.

The victims were identified as B. Chandrasekaran (52) of Kanyakumari and S. Madasamy (49) of Kovilpatti, both drivers and Perumal (38) of Panangudi, Ganesan (40) of Tirunelveli and Viswanthan (50) of Appayanyakkanpatti. The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital at Kovilpatti.

Workshop owner fined

DINDIGUL : A workshop owner at Batlagundu in the district was slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 for appointing a child for work under Child Labour Act, according to R. Divyanathan, Labour Inspector, here on Tuesday.

A special team led by Mr. Divyanathan conducted a surprise raid at Kodaikanal recently and found a child labour aged 14 years working in workshop.

The Department of Labour filed a case in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dindigul against the owner. On hearing the case, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Judge, S. Karpoorasundaram, ordered him to pay the fine.

Hindi Day celebrated

Karaikudi : The Regional Office of the Indian Overseas Bank, Karaikudi, celebrated Hindi Day on Monday.

S. Palanisamy, Senior Regional Manager, who inaugurated the celebration, outlined the advantages of learning Hindi and other languages.

Dinesh Chandra Trivedi, Deputy Director, Central Electro Chemical Research Institute, Karaikudi, was the chief guest.

Closure of IMFL shops

Ramanathapuram : The district administration issued an order to close all Indian-made Foreign Liquor shops on January 15 in view of the Tiruvalluvar Day.

In a statement, the Collector, K. Sellamuthu, said bars attached to the IMFL shops should also be closed. Bars attached to Tamil Nadu hotels in Rameswaram and Mandapam would not function on that day.

Grievance meet

Sivaganga : A pensioners' grievance day meeting will be held at the Collectorate here January 20. In a release, the Collector, Anand Patil, said representations regarding pension-related issues could be sent to the authorities concerned for necessary action.

Free coaching

MADURAI : The Madurai Kamaraj-Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Teachers' Association (MUTA) is conducting a two-day free coaching programme on `Fundamentals of data analysis for research scholars in social sciences' on January 21 and 22. The coaching programme is open for teachers and students pursuing research in social sciences, a MUTA press release said.

Water level

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 132.9 feet with an inflow of 342 cusecs and a discharge 600 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 67.85 feet with an inflow of 688 cusecs and a discharge of 661 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 7876 mcft.

The amount of rainfall recorded at various places (in mm) is: Pulipatti 15, Melur 14, Thaniyamangalam 12, Mettupatti 6, Madurai 4.6, Sattaiyar dam 4.5, Marudhanadi 4, Sittampatti and Virahanoor dam 3 mm each, Peranai 2.8, Idayapatti 1.4 and Periyar dam 1 mm.

Ganja seized

Tuticorin : The police seized ganja from a person at Srivaikundam on Sunday.

The police said Chinnadurai (34) was found moving under suspicious circumstances by a patrol team led by Inspector George Jacob.

On questioning, it was found that he was in possession of 50 gm of ganja in a concealed pack. He was remanded to custody.

`Vaikunda Ekadasi' observed

Tuticorin : `Vaikunda Ekadasi' was observed with pomp and gaiety across the district on Tuesday.

Thousands of devotees visited the nine temples that constituted historic `Navathirupathi' and offered prayers to the deities.

Sources said four thousand songs of Alwars were recited at many places and special pujas performed in many temples.

Held on assault charge

Tuticorin : A 30-year-old man was arrested on a charge of assaulting his father-in-law at Vadakku Kurukattur under Alwarthirunageri police station limits on Sunday.

According to the police, Daniel Raj attacked Muthumalai (52) with a stick, owing to disputes in their family. The accused was remanded to custody.

Man attacked

Tuticorin : The police arrested Selvanayagam (38), who allegedly attacked Madasamy (47) and inflicted injuries on him at Kovilpatti on Sunday.

The police said a quarrel broke between the two on issues related to a house site patta. Subsequently, the accused picked up a stick and attacked Madasamy.

The complainant was later admitted to the Kovilpatti Government Hospital.

Pedestrian injured

Tuticorin : Mariappan (40) was injured when a motorcycle allegedly hit him while he was walking near the Tiruchendur bus stand on Monday.

He suffered leg injuries and was later admitted to Tiruchendur Government Hospital.

The police registered case against his namesake, Mariappan, the bike rider, for driving the two-wheeler in a rash and negligent manner.

The bike rider too had suffered injuries, as the bike skidded after hitting the pedestrian. He was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital.

Road works inaugurated

ERODE: Sathyamangalam Municipality is the first to receive Rs. 1 crore from the Government for road works, said former Minister K.A. Sengottiyan.

Inaugurating the road works on Monday, he said the funds would be utilised to lay roads and repair those damaged. Sathyamangalam Municipal Chairman S.A. Saleem and MLA K.R. Kandasamy spoke. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: In view of the annual fire walking ceremony, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Erode Region, will operate special buses from Anthiyur, Appakudal, Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani and Sathyamangalam to Pariyur near Gobichettipalayam, from the afternoon of January 11 to January 15. - Staff Reporter

Conductor killed

ERODE: A TNSTC bus conductor on duty was killed on Monday as the bus he was on ran him over.

According to the police, Subramani (40) of Sengodampalayam near Uthiyur here was standing at the entrance of the bus proceeding to Muthur from Kangeyam.

When the bus neared Vellakoil, Subramani who was filling the trip sheet and invoice fell from the bus. The vehicle ran him over, killing him on the spot. - Staff Reporter

Couple commit suicide

ERODE: A couple committed suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday. According to the police, Shanmugam (59) of Elumathur and his wife Akilandeswari (52) took the extreme step, as they were frustrated that their daughter was separated from her husband.

Their son was an engineer employed in Chennai. - Staff Reporter

One more held in theft case

KARUR: The police have arrested a person wanted in connection with the last year's case of jewellery theft taking the number of arrested persons in the case to three.

M. Madesh (24) of Kumudapalli, Hosur, was arrested recently and five sovereigns of gold jewellery was recovered. The police had arrested Kumar (26) and Senthil Kumar (27) from Hosur and secured 1.7 kg of stolen jewellery from them. The offence took place on June 8, 2005. — Staff Reporter

Stolen goods recovered

KARUR : The Velliyanai police have arrested three persons and recovered eight electrical motors and two mopeds, stolen from various places in the district. A special team led by Sub-Inspector Vijaya Kothandaraman nabbed R. Velusamy (27) of Vathagoundanur, V. Balusamy (31) of Thennilai and D. Sakthivel (28) of Industrial Estate, Pasupathipalayam, recently and seized the stolen goods. The trio was remanded to custody. — Staff Reporter

Local holiday

Thanjavur: A local holiday has been declared for Thanjavur district on January 19 in view of aradhana of saint composer Sri Thyagaraja. In a press release issued here, Collector M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, said that February 11 will be a working day. Thanjavur: Members of All India Democratic Women's Association staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding the arrest of Ram Dev for "preparing ayurvedic medicines with human and animal bones." They flayed the attack on CPI(M) office in Delhi and burning effigy of Brinda Karat by RSS and BJP members. Chandra of AIDWA led them. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 115.78 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 3,412 cusecs and the outflow, 6,014 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Sentenced

SALEM: Principal District Judge A.J. Muruganandam on Tuesday sentenced a person to life imprisonment in a murder case.

According to the prosecution, Kumar (26) of Ekapuram near Mahudanchavadi had allegedly beaten his father Chinnusamy (52) to death following a family dispute in November 2004. After hearing the arguments, the judge sentenced Kumar to life imprisonment. - Staff Reporter

Killed in accidents

NAMAKKAL: Two persons were killed in two different road accidents here on Tuesday.

The police said that Ganesh (29) of Aandapuram was returning home from Mohanur on his two-wheeler when a private school bus hit his vehicle, killing him on the spot. The Mohanur Police arrested bus driver Muthusamy (57) of Sukkampatti. In another accident, R. Athiyappan (50) of Goundapalayam was killed on the spot when a lorry hit his cycle near Rasipuram.
