BANGALORE: The Labour Department has filed a case against Hewlett Packard GlobalSoft for its alleged failure to provide adequate security to women employees who commute to work at night. Prathiba Srikantamurthy, an employee of the company, was murdered when she was on her way to work. According to an official of the Labour Department, the company violated one of the eight conditions prescribed by the department when it permitted IT (information technology) and ITES (information technology enabled services) companies to employ women on night shifts. The permission was given under Section 25 of the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments (KSCE) Act, 1961. The official said that on inspection, a team of the department found that the company was allegedly not providing adequate security and issued a show-cause notice. When there was no reply, the department filed a case under Section 20 (3) of KSCE Act before a City Small Causes Court on December 31. The case will come up for hearing in April, he added. The "facts" were mentioned in the affidavit filed by Principal Government Advocate M.N. Seshadri before a Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court. Mr. Seshadri told the court that the Labour Department has issued notices to 12 other firms for alleged violation of laws related to employment of women in the night shift.
