Artiste dies on stage

KADAPA: Former Municipal Councillor and artiste M. Chennaiah (65) died of a massive heart attack on stage while enacting the role of sage Viswamitra in the mythological play `Harischandra' at Kadapa Kalakshetram late on Monday night. Mr. Chennaih of Saipet who delivered his dialogues in a poetic manner, collapsed all of a sudden even as the audience lustily cheered him. - Staff Reporter

Red sanders seized

MADANAPALLE: Divisional Forest Officer of Piler flying squad P. Viswesvaraiah said on Tuesday that 35 kg of red sanders costing around Rs. 60,000 and the jeep used to transport them were recently seized in K.V. Palle mandal. - Correspondent

Lighting works

KADAPA: Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy on Tuesday inaugurated modern central lighting works, costing Rs. 24 lakhs in Chinna Chowk. Central lighting from TTD kalyana mantapam to Chinna Chowk bypass road would be completed before Kadapotsavam slated on January 28, the Mayor said. - Staff Reporter

Man murdered

KURNOOL: The police have recovered the body of an unidentified person from the Tungabhadra riverbed near Old City. Town Inspector Rajasekhar Reddy said the throat of the deceased aged 30 was slit and there were several stab injuries on the body. The man was believed to have been murdered last night. The police recovered gutka packets and a pack of cards from the spot. - Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: Four students from Tirupati took part in the recently-concluded 93rd Indian National Science Congress at Hyderabad. K. Vijaya Shreya and S. Chaitanya Varma of Sudhaha Little Citizens High School, N. Meghanasri and N. Renusri of SVU Campus High School took part as National Green Corps volunteers in the event at Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University campus. Shinde, YSR, Naidu greet Muslims

HYDERABAD : Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde has greeted Muslims on the occasion of Id-ul-Zuha and wished the spirit of charity and goodwill promote harmony and peace in society.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has also extended greetings and best wishes to Muslims.

TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, in a separate statement, said Bakrid symbolises sacrifice.

All units of Upper Sileru resume generation

HYDERABAD: The rest of the three units of the Upper Sileru hydro-electric project have also resumed power generation.

This followed nearly 20 days of restoration effort made by engineers and workers.

With this, the entire installed capacity of the station, 240 MW, is available for generation.

The control room of the powerhouse was blasted by Maoists on December 24.

Five from State die in accident in Madurai

MADURAI: Five persons were killed and six others injured in a road accident near Tirumangalam in Madurai district on Tuesday.

According to the police, a group of Ayyappa devotees from Mahabubnagar in Andhra Pradesh were returning from Sabarimala in a jeep when the vehicle collided with a lorry.

The dead were identified as B. Yadiah, 28, R. Linga Reddy,34, R. Narasimhulu, 26, K. Srinivasa Reddy, 43, and K. Madhu, 34.

The police are investigating.

Vedic scholar dead

CHENNAI : Tangirala Venkateswara Avadhani, a vedic scholar hailing from Andhra Pradesh, passed away at Sringeri on Saturday.

He was 85.

Sri Avadhani was the `Purvashrama' father of Sri Bharathi Theertha, pontiff of the Sri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Ring road sought for Vijayawada

HYDERABAD : The State council of the Communist Party of India has urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to take steps for construction of an outer ring road for Vijayawada city on the lines of the one sanctioned for Hyderabad.

In a press release, CPI State executive member K. Subba Raju said that though a proposal for developing outer ring road for decongesting Vijayawada had been mooted more than a decade ago, it remained only on paper. - Special Correspondent

Dalai Lama condoles his English teacher's death

AMARAVATHI (GUNTUR DT.): The Dalai Lama condoled the death of his English teacher, Heinrich Harrer, in an official message on Tuesday.

An Austrian English teacher, Harrer, died on Monday at the age of 93.

The Dalai Lama said: "I am extremely sorry to hear the passing away of my friend Heinrich Harrer. I wish to convey your family members my deeply felt condolence. I am particularly saddened because Heinrich Harrer was a personal friend and taught me English.- Staff Reporterˇ

In-charge MPDO trapped

HYDERABAD : The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Tuesday arrested the in-charge MPDO of Burja in Srikakulam district, Y. Ramulu, and a senior assistant, V. Ramakrishna, on the charge of accepting bribe. - Staff Reporter

Change in vacation schedule

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal has announced changes in its summer vacation schedule.
