Rehabilitation has a vital role to play, especially for patients with disorders like epilepsy, as it can inspire, motivate and, in some cases, may even facilitate 100 per cent recovery. What the Vadamalayan Hospitals did last Sunday was to provide a platform for some disadvantaged patients to give vent to their creative ability. The hospital organised a drawing contest for children affected with epilepsy and mental illness. Since its intention was to eliminate inferiority complex in such children, the participants were not confined to drawing alone. They were also permitted to write essays and poems on the theme of the contest. This year's theme was `freedom.' According to the Managing Director of the hospital, V. Pugalagiri, the competitions motivated the children to come out of their ailment. The top three qualifiers are to represent in a State-level contest, the winners of which are eligible for a purse of Rs.5,000, Rs.3,000 and Rs.1,000, respectively, from Novartis, a Mumbai-based pharmaceutical company. The toppers were G.B. Kousalya, VII Standard, St. Patrick's Middle School, M. Suganya, VIII standard, SBOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School, and K. Sarath Kumar, VI Standard, VHNSN Higher Secondary School. A free medical camp was also simultaneously organised followed by a lively interactive session where the parents and guardians of the children had their doubts cleared. V. Neethiarasu, neurologist, addressed the gathering.
