PALAKKAD: State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Pinarayi Vijayan has said that it is the Left Democratic Front (LDF) which has to decide on the entry of the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) into the Front. Reacting to a statement made by the DIC(K) leader K. Karunakaran in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday that talks [on the proposed entry of the DIC(K) into the LDF] would be held only between DIC(K) president K. Muraleedharan and Mr. Vijayan, the CPI(M) leader told presspersons during his Kerala Yatra at Kolllengode on Tuesday that the issue had to be decided by the CPI(M) Polit Bureau first. Then it would be discussed at the CPI(M) State committee meeting. He said the Polit Bureau had not taken a decision on the matter so far. If it took a favourable decision, the matter would be placed before the Left Democratic Front (LDF) which had to take a final decision. If the LDF decided to admit the DIC(K) into the Front, it would decide who should hold negotiations with the DIC(K) and other matters. The entry of the DIC(K) into the LDF was not decided by the CPI(M) or its State secretary alone, he said. Mr. Vijayan said that in the LDF, each constituent was treated equally. They had their own areas of influence. For example, the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) contests more Assembly seats than the CPI(M) in Kollam district. In the LDF, decisions were not taken on the basis of the size of any party but on the merit of the issue, he said. The CPI(M) leader demanded that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy drop Health Minister K. K. Ramachandran from the Cabinet in view of the strictures passed by the Lok Ayukta against him. It had virtually asked for his dismissal. He said the Chief Minister had to consider the stand taken by the Lok Ayukta. In fact, the Lok Ayukta had asked the Chief Minister to take cognisance of the alleged threat from the office of the Health Minister to those who filed complaint [against the Minister's office] with the Lok Ayukta. He said the United Democratic Front Government had not taken necessary steps to renew the inter-State river water pacts.
