JAIPUR: Nematologist Qudsia Tahseen of Aligarh Muslim University has received a special award for sustained excellence in nematology from the Organisation of Nematologists of Tropical America. Dr.Tahseen, a senior lecturer in the Zoology Department of AMU, is the first Asian to receive the award, instituted in 1981. The award is in recognition to her "sustained excellence" in the field of nematology. An expert in taxonomy of nematodes, Dr.Tahseen has made critical observations on the structure and morphology of bacteriophagous and predatory species of nematodes using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Her findings, published in prestigious international journals, have been well received in the community of nematologists. Dr.Tahseen, who has researched extensively on nematodes in the Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Rajasthan, has visited and worked at some of the leading laboratories in Europe, including Rothamsted Research, British Natural History Museum, University of Reading and CABI, England, Scottish Crop Research Institute, Scotland, and Ghent University and Agriculture Institute, Belgium. Her research and findings have earned her five National Young Scientist awards, including the prestigious Indian National Science Academy Young Scientist Medal and international post-doctoral and visiting fellowships. Her research has so far been funded by various agencies including the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Indian National Science Academy, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, and Rothamsted Research, UK.
