Prosecution gives undertaking at anticipatory bail hearing

CHENNAI : Four Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionaries, who have filed anticipatory bail pleas apprehending arrest in connection with the December 18 stampede here, will not be arrested till January 18.

An undertaking to this effect was given by the prosecution at the Principal Sessions Court, when the anticipatory bail petitions came up for hearing on Tuesday.

During arguments, the City Public Prosecutor said the prosecution would file a special leave petition against the conditional bail to DMK councillor K. Dhanasekaran, who was arrested on December 20 in connection with the tragedy. He also submitted that a probe was on to ascertain the role played by other influential people in the incident.

When he sought an adjournment, senior counsel R. Shanmugasundaram said the petitioners should not be arrested in the mean time. The City Public Prosecutor gave an assurance that they would not be arrested while the anticipatory bail pleas were pending in court.

The petitioners — R. Ramamoorthy, P. Joseph and S. Ravi and S. Senthilkumar — said they had been falsely implicated in the case to cover up the officials' inefficiency to handle flood relief distribution.

Forty-two persons died in the stampede.
