Bangalore: A large number of women from various districts gathered on Tuesday at Banappa Park in protest against the effects of globalisation on women and Indian culture. Responding to a call from All India Mahila Samskruthika Sanghatane, Karnataka State Committee, the women asked for an end to gender-based atrocities, obscenity, wide spread sale of liquor and female foeticide. At the end of the rally, an effigy, "Globalisation-Enemy of Women and Culture", was set on fire by the sanghatane general secretary, H.G. Jayalakshmi. Addressing the protestors earlier, she said, "Crimes against women are increasing and even infants are not spared. Globalisation has brought in Western culture and values and made life unsafe for women. Education has been commercialised and girls denied educational opportunities. We will launch a strong movement against globalisation which is against us.'' In a memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, the sanghatane asked for more employment opportunities for women, restoring agricultural subsidies, free education for girls and curbs on cable TV programmes and movies which denigrated women.
