NEW DELHI: Six alleged highway robbers from Mewat in Haryana were arrested following an encounter with the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police at Najafgarh on Monday. Two country-made firearms and stolen property worth Rs. 1.25 crores were recovered from their possession. Acting on a tip-off that a criminal from Mewat, Yunis Khan, and his accomplice would come to Najafgarh to commit robbery, a Special Staff team laid a trap on Surakhpur-Najafgarh Road near Mitraon-Jharoda Kalan crossing and intercepted a Maruti car in which the suspects were moving. Two of the occupants, Yunis and Ajit Singh, opened fire at the police, at which the former too fired in self-defence. Subsequently, the police overpowered the six occupants. The other four were identified as Sunil Kumar, Vinod, Karamvir and Jacom. During interrogation, Yunis allegedly revealed that on December 16 last year, he and his accomplices visited a factory of the Indian Tobacco Company at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh to conduct a reconnaissance. The next day, they followed a truck carrying 450 cartons of Gold Flake cigarettes, which was heading to the company's warehouse in Bangalore.
