Some relief from intense cold

Staff Reporter

Minimum temperature in the Capital rose to 4.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday

  • Sunday and Monday mornings had seen the minimum temperature touching 0.2 degrees Celsius and 1.4 degrees Celsius respectively
  • Severe cold conditions are likely to prevail for a few more days
  • No impact on flight operations though movement of trains was affected

NEW DELHI: Despite the mercury remaining below normal, Delhiites had some relief from the intense cold wave conditions that they have been experiencing for the past two days as the minimum temperature rose to 4.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The morning saw shallow fog in and around the city, but it did not have any impact on flight operations though movement of trains was affected.

Significantly, Sunday and Monday mornings had seen the minimum temperature touching 0.2 degrees Celsius and 1.4 degrees Celsius respectively, a record for the past several decades. But on Tuesday, the minimum temperature rose by almost three degrees compared to Monday, though it was still three degrees below normal, while the maximum temperature stood at 19.9 degrees Celsius, which was also one degree below normal.

However, severe cold conditions are likely to prevail for a few more days. The BBC has forecast a minimum of 1 degree Celsius for this coming Friday, after which the weather is likely to improve. On the contrary, the Meteorological Department officials here have forecast a rise in the night temperature to around 5 to 6 degrees Celsius over the next couple of days.

Despite some fog in the morning, flights operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport here remained normal as the runway visibility range remained around 1,200 metres. However, movement of trains was affected in the entire Northern region leading to delay of over two dozen trains and rescheduling of around a dozen other.

Some trains including the Farrukhabad-Bhiwani Kalindi Express, Allahabad-Ambala Unchahar Express, the Delhi-Sealdah Lal Quila Express and the Toofan Express were cancelled.
