KARWAR: Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) K.S. Sureshbabu has said that the police are maintaining vigil in all sensitive places, including Bhatkal, after terrorists stuck at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, killing a retired professor. He told presspersons that security has been beefed up after a person from Bhatkal was arrested in Chennai a few days ago in connection with the attack. He denied that terrorists are hiding in Bhatkal, and said he has no information about the visit of a special police team from Bangalore to Uttara Kannada. Mr. Sureshbabu refuted the argument that the closure of mining in Kudremukh may increase naxalite activities. In fact, the influence of naxalites has decreased in the State, he said. The fact that the people of the region affected by naxalism voted in large numbers in the recently concluded panchayat elections is an indication that the influence of the Maoists has been marginal. He said investigation is on into the murder of BJP leader Thimappa Naik in Bhatkal.
