NSS unit of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Red Ribbon Club, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society and Sri Parasakthi College for Women in Courtallam took out a rally recently. Revenue Divisional Officer, Tenkasi, P. Ramana Saraswathi, flagged off the rally. Principal A. Prema presided. Over 600 students of Sri Parasakthi College for Women, led by NSS and RRC Programme Officer, S. Kayarkanni, NSS officers S. Shanthakumari, S. Saroja and Maheshwari, took part in the rally. Wearing masks and holding placards, they raised slogans to create an awareness of AIDS. Pamphlets carrying the theme were distributed.
A.P.C. Mahalaxmi College for Women in Tuticorin organised an inter-collegiate poetry competition on "If Bharatiyar was alive today' recently. Students from VOC College, Tuticorin, Sri Saradha College, Tirunelveli, Govindammal Aditanar College, Tiruchendur, Lakshmipuram Arts College, Neyyoor, St. John's College, Palayamkottai, and TDMNS College, T. Kallikulam, and the host, took part in the competition. Balasubramaniam, a third-year B.Sc. student, VOC College, was adjudged as the winner in the closely fought contest. Subadra Devi of Sri Saradha College and M. Kalpana Devi of Govindammal Aditanar College secured the second and third spots respectively.
National Engineering College at Kovilpatti organised an international conference on "Recent trends in information systems" on its premises recently. In his keynote address, G. Hemantha Kumar of University of Mysore said recent advancements in automated face analysis, pattern recognition and machine learning had made it possible to develop an automatic face recognition system. Though research in automatic face recognition was conducted since 1960s, it was in recent years that the scientists were able to make significant progress in face modelling and analysis technique. Earlier, V. Shankar, executive vice-president, Covansys (India) Private Limited, Chennai, inaugurated the conference.
Not only academic skills but also development of decision-making skills makes man perfect. Teachers should function like a friend, philosopher and guide to students, said High Court Judge D. Murugesan at the convocation of HKRH College in Uthamapalayam recently. About 364 graduates including 126 girls received degree certificates from the judge. College principal K. Shahul Hameed presided.
