NEW DELHI: Artistes from the field of music and dance have joined hands with the Indian Cancer Society in an effort to highlight the need for cancer awareness and screening. And as part of the programme "Artistes against Cancer", danseuse Geeta Chandran and her Natya Vriksha Dance Company will present a Bharatanatyam ballet at Stein Auditorium in India Habitat Centre here on January 20. Also, other artistes from the field of music and dance, including leaders in their field like Birju Maharaj, Ustaad Shujaat Hussain Khan and Shubha Mudgal too have pitched in with the Indian Cancer Society to highlight the need for cancer awareness and screening, stating that this is required as much as quality patient care. "Each artiste through their programme will emphasise the fact that cancer respects neither class nor wealth, creed or age and will try to draw attention to fear, pain and trauma that the patient and his family have to go through," said Jyotsna Govil of the Indian Cancer Society, adding: "Geeta Chandran has consistently used her celebrity status to take up social and humanitarian causes through her dance. Geeta performs `Ballet of Life', weaving abstract notions of joy, hope, beauty of spirit, and ultimate victory of the human spirit. She is the artistic director of the troupe, comprising dancers trained by her." For those who want to be part of the programme, invitation cards can be collected from India Habitat Centre and the Indian Cancer Society at Jangpura Extension.
