CHENNAI : Sarees, handbags, jewelleries, wall hangings, slippers and fancy items - jute, once popularly associated with gunny bags, is now the stuff of high fashion. The variety and range of jute products available today is mind boggling, as the exhibition at "Sis Vihar," Corporation Community Centre (behind Nageswara Rao Park), Mylapore, shows. Thanks to the Jute Manufacturing Development Council, today jute is not only a major fibre but also a raw material for fancy products and dress material. The unique characteristics of jute fibre - such as its biodegradability and non-toxicity - give jute products an ecological and aesthetic edge over synthetic items. Jute floor coverings, mats and rugs and dhurries in a plethora of designs, colours and sizes to suit the tastes of people who want to furnish their homes or offices with eco-friendly products Designers have now turned to jute fabrics, a combination of jute and natural fibres, for producing fabrics to suit the dictates of fashion. The latest designs made of such fabrics embedded with buttons, fashion trinkets, laces are on sale at the show. Jewellery from jute and other materials, which many people may not be aware of, are also showcased at the fair. Cotton and silk sarees and churidar sets, with jute yarn as the base, are a big attraction at the exhibition. The fair is open till January 15.
