RAISING THE PITCH: Drummers at the campaign by Exnora in T. Nagar. Photo: K. Pichumani
CHENNAI: Dustbins became drums here on Wednesday evening as Exnora took its message of a "smokeless bhogi" to the streets. Raghunath Sruthi, a music troupe, used an array of dustbins as percussion instruments to entertain the audience of curious passers-by and Exnora International members near Kannadasan statue, off G.N. Chetty Road in T. Nagar. The group's message: let the last day of Margazhi be re-christened "Sugadhara Pongal" (hygienic or clean pongal) to avoid the pollution caused by burning plastic and rubber waste. M.B. Nirmal, founder of Exnora, said the smoke from burning of waste on that day rivalled the amount of vehicular pollution released in a whole year. Sulochana Ramaseshan, Exnora president, said the smoke cut visibility enough to cause difficulties for planes taking off and landing. T.K. Rajendran, Additional Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai, appealed to Exnora to hold more such events.
