New facility for liver dialysis
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD:
Global Hospitals has staked its claim as the first hospital in the Asia-Pacific region to acquire an ultra modern artificial liver dialysis therapy unit titled Prometheus.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, hospital chairman and managing director K. Ravindranath and other doctors said the unit would benefit patients with multi-organ failure arising due to liver diseases or other systemic problems, patients of acute liver failure and those suffering from severe alcoholic hepatitis.
Prometheus can function as an artificial kidney as well, apart from artificial liver, since it enables combined liver dialysis (albumin dialysis) and kidney (renal) dialysis, Dr. Ravindranath said. The technology used in the unit would be a lifesaving method in crisis situations till the liver recovers from an acute failure and also act as a bridge during liver transplantation.
Global Hospitals has so far carried out 52 kidney transplants, 23 liver transplants while and one case each is recorded for heart and bone marrow transplants.
