`Club social reforms with language movement'

A front with a common minimum programme for development of Kannada should be launched: Baragur Ramachandrappa

Bangalore: The former Chairman of Kannada Development Authority Baragur Ramachandrappa has called for emulating Tamil Nadu in clubbing the social reforms movement and that of development of Kannada instead of aping that State only in the matter of language.

Addressing members of the Bandaya Sahitya Sanghatane here on Tuesday, Mr. Ramachandrappa said what the Kannada protagonists in the State were doing was to demand primacy for Kannada in all walks of life just because the neighbouring State had also done that.

Demand

Some leaders in Karnataka were demanding classical language status to Kannada as Tamil was accorded that status by the UPA Government at the Centre, he said.

What was good for the people was a combination of both the social reforms movement that was launched in Tamil Nadu decades ago and the agitation demanding primacy for Tamil in that State in all walks of life. Such a combination involving all progressive people and organisations would bring about healthy changes in society and overall development of the State.

Instead of an individual and organisation-centric Kannada movement, a front with a common minimum programme for development of Kannada should be launched, he said.

Dr. Ramachandrappa called for an end to squabbles among Kannada writers and said that they should concentrate on ideology.

He felt that the Bandaya movement was more relevant now than ever before, particularly after the advent of globalisation.
