This Day That Age
The latest addition to broadcasting facilities in Madras, a 20 kw medium-wave transmitter, was inaugurated on January 11 by Dr. B.V. Keskar, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, at Avadi, about 12 miles from Madras City. Dr. Keskar said it was the third 20 kw transmitter being opened during the financial year as part of AIR's development programme. The Minister announced that there was a proposal under the Second Five-Year Plan to strengthen further the Madras area. A 100 kw short-wave transmitter was being erected at Avadi. There would be another high-power medium-wave transmitter probably at Tiruchi. The opening of the 100 kw short-wave transmitter would help broadcast Tamil programmes from Madras to South-East Asia. Mr. K. Kamaraj, Chief Minister, referred to the keen interest shown by the villagers to learn current events and said they all gathered around the community sets to hear the broadcasts. Mr. Sri Prakasa, Governor, thanked Dr. Keskar on behalf of the Madras Government and the people for the additional amenity provided.
