dated January 13, 1956: Malaya-Singapore merger

Singapore's Chief Minister, Mr. David Marshall, has suggested that a committee be set up to consider the question of the union of Singapore with the Malayan Federation. He said at Kuala Lumpur on January 11 that he had discussed this with the Chief Minister of Malaya before his departure for London and added that he considered that for the future welfare of both the territories they should be united soon. "The longer we delay the more difficult it would be to bring about a union," Mr. Marshall said.
