dated January 13, 1956: University centenary

To celebrate the centenary of the Madras University, which will complete 100 years of existence in January 1957, a distinguished gathering of educationists and men eminent in many walks of life met at the Senate House, Chepauk, Madras, on January 11, and decided on the formation of an influential Centenary Celebrations Committee. The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Mr. P.V. Rajamannar, who presided, was chosen the President of the Committee. Sir Mahomed Usman, a former Vice-Chancellor, moved a resolution which stated "that the centenary of the University of Madras be observed in January 1957, and that suitable steps be taken for this purpose."
