Letters to the Editor
An avid reader of The Hindu and The Guardian, I found Alan Rusbridger and Ian Mayes' lectures instructive. I commend your initiative to appoint India's first Readers' Editor based on The Guardian model. I was recalling Kingsley Martin's difficulties with C.P. Scott, who usually thought one should pay for the privilege of writing for the Manchester Guardian but sought him out with a lucrative offer. Eventually, the Manchester Guardian's loss was a gain to the New Statesman and Nation; I presume Martin was his own Readers' Editor.
S. Soundararajan,
* * * Mr. Rusbridger's observation that the generation that is not interested in voting is the same generation that is not interested in reading newspapers is not true in many cases. Maybe the young do not cast their vote because they have lost faith in the system. And they perhaps take the decision after reading the newspapers.
K. Madhusoodan,
* * * By taking a decision to appoint a Readers' Editor, The Hindu has once again set new standards in print journalism. The move will certainly bring the readers closer to the newspaper.
P.L. Ramana,
* * * The decision marks a continuation in The Hindu 's policy of encouraging active reader participation.
V.N. Mukundarajan,
* * * A Readers' Editor can play an important role between the readers and editors. My good wishes for your honest effort at being a self-correcting institution.
Philip Verghese Ariel,
* * * The post will strengthen the checks-and-balances machinery, and enhance the newspaper's credibility.
P.K. Thomas,
* * * As a reader of over 35 years, I notice that The Hindu , though perceived as conservative, is all for new ideas of readers' interest. With the added advantage of an exclusive editor, the readers will benefit a lot in the days ahead. I am thankful to the newspaper for the respect it has for its readers.
G. Ramachandran,
* * * Slanted or one-sided reporting cannot create a society that believes in justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity of all. The Readers' Editor, besides attending to complaints, should ensure that your editorial policy and the values The Hindu stands for are reflected in news coverage.
A.R. Vattacary,
* * * The Hindu has many firsts to its credit. Its decision to appoint a Readers' Editor is another feather in its cap.
P.M. Gopalan,
* * * The move will enable The Hindu to not only remain in tune with the pulse of the people but will also make the paper more reader-friendly. The independent interface will also help in making mid-course corrections, so essential for a vibrant organisation.
Col. R.D. Singh,
* * * The appointment of a Readers' Editor will further strengthen the credibility of The Hindu that is already known for its transparent, credible, unbiased, and balanced reporting.
