Gujarat High Court accepts plea on DNA test of bone samples

CBI for doing the tests at Centre for DNA Finger Printing and Diagnosis

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court has accepted the CBI plea for shifting the proposed DNA test of the bone samples of the Pandarvada communal riot victims from an autonomous institution to a government-run laboratory, both in Hyderabad.

The court agreed to authorise the CBI to get the samples tested at the Centre for DNA Finger Printing and Diagnosis, Hyderabad, instead of at the Red Hill Forensic Laboratory, also at Hyderabad, which was originally suggested by petitioner Teesta Setalvad to the court.

"Better equipped"

The court accepted the CBI's stand that the Centre for DNA was better equipped to handle such cases instead of the Red Hill without compromising with Ms. Setalvad's stand that the test be carried out in a laboratory outside Gujarat. The court is scheduled to take up on Friday the State Government's plea seeking a fresh direction for the DNA test on the ground that the bone samples had been badly mixed up due to "repeated'' digging of the grave. The Government had claimed that the grave had been dug up at least three times so far leaving little chances for authenticity of the samples.
