Meet to review steps to combat naxalism

Focus on streamlining of efforts to strengthen security

NEW DELHI: The 19th Coordination Centre meeting on naxalism will be held here on Friday to review and coordinate the steps being taken by the naxal affected States to combat the menace.

The meeting, to be presided over by Union Home Secretary V.K. Duggal, will be attended by Chief Secretaries and Directors-General of Police of the affected States and senior officers of the Home Ministry.

The naxal situation and measures being taken to deal with the problem on security, development and public perception fronts will come up for a detailed assessment, sources said here.

The focus will be on further streamlining of efforts to strengthen the security, intelligence and development structures and review mechanisms at the State, district and police station levels to meet the challenge. The Centre is willing to extend all possible help to supplement the efforts of the State governments for the purpose, the sources said.

Police chiefs and Chief Secretaries of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal will be attending the meeting, the first since the Jehanabad jail break by naxals in Bihar about two months ago.
