THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government proposes to increase the number of members in the State Information Commission to five soon. This was announced at a conference convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Thursday on the request of Chief Information Commissioner Palat Mohandas. The Government had constituted a three member Commission in October and appointed the Chief Information Commissioner and an Information Commissioner. The recommendation to appoint a third member was returned by Governor R.L. Bhatia on technical grounds. The Government was under political pressure to appoint more commissioners, but the number was limited considering the financial implications. The Commission is yet to start functioning from its office for want of facilities. At the conference, it was decided to establish necessary infrastructure for the Commission and expedite announcement of Public Information Officers (PIOs) by various departments and Government agencies. Many departments and Government funded agencies are yet to name the PIOs. The available list of PIOs would immediately be handed over to the Commission. The conference decided to convene a high-level meeting to discuss action needed to expedite implementation of the Right to Information Act.
