S.M. Krishna is all praise for Triplicane
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Maharashtra Governor, S.M. Krishna, was in Triplicane on Wednesday to give a talk on good governance.
Not many expected him to share his insights on certain localities of Chennai. So, they were pleasantly surprised when the Governor described Mylapore and Triplicane as "vibrant cultural extensions of Chennai."
Mr. Krishna, who was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004, did not stop with that statement.
He recalled his visit to Chennai in 1958 to attend a concert of Hindustani musician Bade Ghulam Ali Khan at the Music Academy.
Mentioning that even though there had been a perception outside that Hindi was frowned upon or not tolerated in Chennai, he said the veteran musician went on to conclude his concert only at 2 a.m. or 2.30 a.m., with the audience listening in rapture the whole time.
Noting that the Kasturi Srinivasan Library at Triplicane continued to serve the people, Mr. Krishna praised the "literate people of Chennai" for using the library, despite the blitz of the electronic media.
He said the locality did not just belong to Chennai but to the entire country.
The Governor also recounted vividly the interaction he had had with Rajaji at Chennai in the late 1960s as part of a delegation of Members of Parliament.
