Educationists flay move to auction school building, say public property should not be privatised

CHENNAI: Educationists have urged the government to ensure that government schools are not allowed to close down in future.

Responding to a news report in The Hindu of January 1 on the non-functioning of public schools in Mathur village in north Chennai, educationists of the Kalvi alliance condemned the proposal of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board to auction a public school building.

Official apathy

"The proposal shows that the government is not eager to revive the schools or run them efficiently," educationists, including S.S.Rajagopalan and V. Vasanthi Devi, said here in a release.

"Government property should not fall into the hands of commercial interests. It should be the policy of the government to nurture and develop the public education system," the release added.

The educationists pointed out that the government could revive schools with poor enrolment with the help of the local community.

No unaided fee-levying school should be permitted in areas covered by the public education system, they said.
