CHENNAI : Chennai is set to get a Monorail Mass Rapid Transit System -- touted to be the first of its kind in the country -- that will ease traffic congestion and match up to future requirements. The Government opted for the monorail system on the basis of the recommendation by the Pallavan Transport Consultancy Services Ltd; which studied the various urban transport alternatives. The PCTS had launched traffic surveys and examined various technology options on the directives of Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa. The Monorail's advantages include safety, quicker project execution, low noise pollution and lower cost to consumer. The project will be implemented on a design, build, own, operate and transfer basis and the Government has invited global tenders for the project. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Ltd will be the implementing agency for the project. The Monorail is expected to ease traffic congestion in the Metropolitan area efficiently.
Little disruption
The proposed system will be implemented relatively quickly, without undue traffic diversion and will involve minimal acquisition of land and little disruption to existing utilities and services. Being an elevated Mass Rapid Transit System, Monorail precludes accident possibilities with surface traffic. The system will cater to the passenger demands on high density as well as low density corridors. It is also capable of easy capacity upgradation. The environment-friendly system is run on rubber tyres and is electrically powered.
