SMS from city police chief

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The City Police have hit upon a novel idea to prevent burning of waste on `Bhogi' day.

An appeal by Greater Chennai Police Commissioner R. Nataraj has been messaged to subscribers of all four cellular phone service providers — Airtel, Aircel, BSNL and Hutch.

The message reads, "Have a safe Bhogi & Prosperous Pongal. For police help contact 100 - Commissioner of Police, Chennai."

The message is being sent with a dual purpose — to request the people not to burn waste on Bhogi and in case they come across someone burning garbage, they can contact the police emergency number to register a complaint, the police said.

The four service providers have totally 30 lakh subscribers and the message will reach almost all of them, said a senior police officer.

Warning

Mr. Nataraj, on Thursday warned against burning of rubber material such as tyres and tubes during Bhogi celebrations.

He told mediapersons that police and officials of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board would patrol the city to check violation, if any.

Necessary security arrangements would be made for "Kaanum Pongal" celebrations too. As a precautionary measure, no one would be allowed to take bath in the sea on that day , he said.
