Paediatric urology workshop at AIMS

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Department of Paediatric Surgery at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) is hosting a two-day workshop-cum-symposium on paediatric urology this weekend. The workshop is part of the 5th international joint meeting of the Asian Society of Paediatric Urology and the Indian Society for Paediatric Urology.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will be inaugurating the workshop on Saturday, at which senior paediatric surgeons from the U.S., the U.K. and Australia will participate. The workshop will be demonstrating new techniques prevalent abroad in addressing cases of paediatric urology. About 400 delegates are expected to participate in it.

A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, District Collector, will release the official publication of the Urology Societies called Progress in Paediatric Urology. Swami Poornamritananda Puri will give the benedictory address.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mohan Abraham, Head of the Paediatric Surgery at AIMS and the organising secretary of the event, said that most of the urinary tract problems went undiagnosed and underestimated in the Indian population. This was so because of the lack of awareness on the part of the parents and also the reluctance to examine the private parts of the child.

Need for check-up

There were cases of girls who had been brought up as boys because of presence of the external male genital organ, said Dr. Abraham.

However, the sperm producing testis would be missing. Only a thorough examination reveals the presence of a uterus and ovaries. An early corrective surgery would save the child, he added.

There are other cases of stunted growth and abdominal pain which are connected to the problems in urinary tract. There are many conditions which a surgeon would be able to identify and treat. In view of the need of addressing such problems, a paediatric urology clinic would also be started at AIMS on the occasion. The clinic, to function on Saturdays, will be inaugurated by S. Hariharan, Managing Director of Pariyaram Medical College on January 14.
