KOCHI: The Cochin Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) plans to set up a hostel for working women in view of the increasing number of women being employed in the various units at the zone. The xone authorities are in talks with the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) for building a hostel, said Development Commissioner of the Zone C. J. Mathew. He said that the response from the GCDA had been positive and that work on the project was expected to begin soon. About an acre of land would be needed for the hostel, which would be located close to the special economic zone. Out of the approximately 8,000 people employed at the zone, about 1,500 are women. Accommodation for these women employees has been a problem and the proposed hostel facility is expected to meet this requirement to a certain extent. Women are employed mostly in the garments units and with more garment-makers expected to launch business at the zone, the number of women employees will go up. Mr. Mathew said that the zone would have a warehousing facility for the manufactures that are within the economic zone. Roughly 15,000 sq. ft. of space would be available at the warehousing facility that would be available to the units working out of the economic zone. About Rs.30 lakhs would be invested to build the facility. In the meanwhile, Technopolis, an information technology complex being built by the Muthoot Pappachan group at a cost of Rs.40 crores, will be commissioned soon. Mr. Mathew said that the first occupant was expected to come in March. Technopolis is the first of its kind venture in which a private group was allowed to develop space for information technology in a Special Economic Zone.
