dated January 14, 1956: The Taj Mahal

There is no crack or damage in the main building of the Taj Mahal that would endanger the 400-year-old monument, Mr. B.B. Lall, Superintendent of Archaeological Office, Agra, said at Agra on January 12. Mr. Lall was commenting on recent reports of damage to the Taj. He said that the outer courtyard wall, a portion of which collapsed recently, was more than 300 yards away and it did not affect the building in any way. It was noticed in 1930 for the first time that some slabs on the south-west corner of the main building had slightly shifted outward. A committee appointed by the Government in 1946 considered that this was not dangerous. Repairs were carried out to certain parts which needed urgent attention.
