Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Friday that the higher education sector in Kerala did not compare well with that of other States. Inaugurating the M.Ed. course at Mar Theophilus Training College in Nalanchira, the Chief Minister said there should be a new sense of direction and purpose for improving higher education in the State. Kerala was ranked 21st in India when the availability of infrastructure for imparting quality higher education for students between the age of 16 and 21 in the State was audited by an independent agency. The survey found that Kerala did not have even one of the top 70 Indian institutions imparting higher education. He said the Global Educational meet in Kochi in February would discuss various aspects of improving the higher education sector in the State. The State should give stress on courses and institutions imparting quality training to teachers. Joseph Mar Thomas, Major Athiroopatha Sahaya Metran, presided over the function. Principal K. Mercy Kutty was present.
