Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor T V Rajeswar on Friday ordered a probe into the death of a second year MBBS student of the King George Medical University (KGMU) here on Wednesday.

The inquiry into the death of Deepak Agrawal will be conducted by a three-member committee headed by former U.P. chief secretary V. K. Saxena. The other members of the panel are the head of the Department of Neurology (KGMU), A. M. Kar, and the head, Department of Critical Care Medicine (SGPGI, Lucknow,), A. K. Baroniya, a Raj Bhawan spokesperson said here.

The committee, which will have the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of Governor's Secretariat, R. K. Saxena as its convenor, has been directed to submit its report within a month.

The committee will have to enquire into all aspects related to the incident including whether Deepak was given adequate and timely medical attention and treatment, why the ventilators in the varsity's trauma centre were not functioning and what efforts were made by the varsity administration to make the equipment function.

The committee will also examine whether KGMU was equipped for meeting emergency situations and what steps should be taken to equip the institution with infrastructural and other facilities to meet life threatening situations.

The committee would be free to enquire into other relevant aspects of the incident, the statement added.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav announced a compensation of Rs five lakhs to the next of kin of Deepak

Mr. Yadav has also appealed to the students of KGMU to maintain peace in the campus, according to an official spokesman here.

Deepak Agarwal, a 2004 batch student at KGMU, had a fall recently during preparations for a forthcoming convocation and suffered serious injuries on the head and was consequently rushed to the trauma centre of the hospital.

He, however, succumbed to his injuries later allegedly owing to non-availability of ventilators at the centre.
