Beetle farmers on fast unto death

The farmers were to receive an assistance of Rs 60 lakhs

Mahoba: The growers of the fragrant `Deshavari Paan' in this central district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday resorted to "fast unto death", appalled by government response in not getting overdue assistance.

Official sources said here on Friday that the betel farmers had handed over a notice to District Magistrate Ravindra, intimating him about their agitation from January 5 but later put on hold their plan following an assurance by local MLA and U.P. Industrial Development Corporation chairman Siddhgopal Sahu.

After failing to get anything concrete from Mr Sahu's side, the betel farmers proceeded on "fast unto death" from Friday. The farmers have alleged that the district administration has not even drawn the list of beneficiaries under the fund and there is no other alternative left with betel growers, but resort to the extreme step. The farmers were to receive the assistance of Rs 60 lakhs.
