dated January 16, 1956: Migration from E.Pakistan

Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan, Pakistan High Commissioner in India, reiterated in New Delhi on January 15 his suggestion that issue of immigration certificates to the Hindus in East Pakistan should be discontinued, to put an end to their exodus to India. Referring to certain reports of the press conference he held in Jullundur a few days ago, Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan said: "I do not think I ever suggested there that the Government of India was inviting people (minorities) from East Pakistan or instigating them to come over to India. What I suggested was that the Government of India should consider ways and means of stopping this migration. Pakistan alone cannot do it." He said that the best thing would be to "seal this gate for a short time, say a couple of years," for the migrants and enable the people (minorities) in East Pakistan to adjust themselves to the conditions in the country to which they belonged.
